I know I just wanted this dress for myself. However, it sold out in a matter of minutes, and although I love to keep my dollar black, I couldn’t afford it.
It retails for $810 and that is just WAY out my budget and financial means.
it comes in 3 colors, white, indigo, and black. And has a corset-inspired silhouette with curved side cutouts and pointy collar.
So when I got my hands on McCalls pattern 7996, I automatically thought about recreating something similar to the Fenty Denim Dress.
I had this heavyweight denim fabric from Minerva Fabrics sitting around and I knew this would be the perfect project.
Created new hemline
Shortened hem
Removed pocket flaps
Widened sleeve pattern
Widened back and front bodice
To accentuate the stitching I used a neon orange thread. It gave a great contrast and pop of color.
This was so fun to make and definitely a piece I can style as a jacket or dress.
I can say this piece is approximately $30 to $50 to make, a way more affordable approach for my pockets.
If you feel inspired, I think you should attempt creating this look too.

]]>I wanted to keep it street chic and a little feminine. So I created this top to go with the colorway of this bloodline Jordan 1s. As you know, I always have to sew some components of my look and I used sewing pattern McCalls 7724.
I purchased this dark red silk charmeuse from Mood Fabrics, for $14 per yard. I used two yards and it sufficed for the size I cut.
It had a slight give of stretch but not that much. However a beautiful drape.
Unfortunately, I purchased it in store a while ago but here is something similar.
McCalls 7724 is definitely a pattern for someone with intermediate or advanced sewing skills. I sewed the option of view C. I thought it was a breeze until it came to creating the narrow hem. It was such a challenge and annoying.
The hemline is too much of a curve hem to create a regular machine or narrow hem. I know I will be using this pattern again and my best suggestion would be to create a hem facing. It would be so much easier and have such a cleaner finish.
All in all, I LOVE this pattern very much and will be making more varieties of this top in different fabrics.
For this top, I cut a size 12.
However, if I had to remake this top, I would cut a size 12 but blend out the bottom of the front and back piece to a size 16 or 18 due to my hips, because I could not place additional buttons below my waistline because the top did NOT close around my wide hips.
There, I said it. I’ve admitted to it. And I’m not going to change that. So, let's talk about this one I'm rocking here.
Wait.
I'm also obsessed with neon. Yes, I slipped into the neon spiraling trend going on. I’ve made a bodysuit in neon, thus far, (if you follow me on Instagram, you would know. P.S: Go on over there and follow me by the way) and now I decided to make a blazer dress.
I stepped out of just making a plain old blazer and decided to spice it up for the spring and make a dress. In order to create this blazer dress, I used the amazing Mimi G Simplicity pattern 8749, with a few modifications.
I removed the sleeves. I added 1-inch ease on the side seams (for my ladies with hips), and created 8 buttonhole placements instead of 1. I wanted a blatant contrast against the neon green of this suiting wool fabric, and I felt black buttons would be great. I made no adjustment to the length, because my favorite feature is my legs, and they were going to be the show of this blazer dress, honey.
My favorite part of this whole look, and my own little touch, are my pocket flaps.
“FEMME POWER”
As a designer, I love to incorporate words or symbols of empowerment and messages that invoke social awareness into my style/silhouette. Clothing always states who you are and impersonate your mood/who you can be, and that is what I wanted from this look. I wanted femininity and boss vibes, and those two words spoke exactly that.
Below I have attached links to the pattern and fabrication.
The buttons were bought from Pacific Trimming and unfortunately, there are no links to it on their site. But I put some similar options here.
